A Scrap of Paper

Victorien Sardou (1831-1908) was a French dramatist who dominated the French stage in the late 19th century. He is best remembered today for his development, along with Eugene Scribe, of the well-made play. The form has a strong Neoclassical flavor, involving a tight plot and a climax that takes place close to the end of the play. His work A Scrap of Paper (Les Pattes de mouche; 1860) is a model of the well-made play. A foolish letter, written by a young girl, Louise, to her young lover, Prosper, lies hidden in their post-office, a statue. Three years later the girl returns as a Baron's wife. The lover also returns, and both try to get possession of the letter in the statue, their efforts producing many comedy situations.
