It is 1969, and Nicaragia is ruled by the brutal dictator, Anastasio Somoza. Julia Bennett, the wife of an American banker posted to Nicaragua, has come to love this country and its people but is increasingly estranged from her husband who does business with the dictator's corrupt friends. Marshall enjoys living in Nicaragua and views his job as an important step toward promotion. When Julia gives a lift to Jose Maria, a young man who has been tortured by Somoza's "Angel of Death," she has no idea that she will fall in love or that she is taking sides in a revolution. Soon Julia is forced to confront her role and responsibility, both in her marriage and in the country she loves. Jose Maria risks his life and his cause by loving her. And Marshall's connections in high places endanger all three of them.
