This book presents the results of a study carried out in Albania during a four year period between 2001-2004, financed by the Office of UN Volunteers near UNDP in Tirana. In this book, it is argued in a deep theoretical way that voluntary activity is a necessary thread of the functionality of human society in every stage of its development. It is argued that in the pantheon of volunteers the central place is taken by the figure of the mother, who, in every society has done and still does a great deal of voluntary work for the raising and the socialization of children. The book also highlights the fact that the work of true artist that serve as a socialization tool and as a aesthetic education for many generations, is in its foundation voluntary a activity. It presents in details the work of scientist as a volunteer activity. The book states that the work of scientist is the most altruistic work, because it serves its contemporaries and generations to come, friends and their opponents, in particular in the field of medicine. The book also presents a wide picture of voluntary activities and the mentality for voluntarism in Albanian traditional society, totalitarian and democracy.
