Disparities in the health of vulnerable Hispanic populations require innovative approaches that are culturally-appropriate. The use of promotores/as, who are community health workers, unique to Hispanic populations is an innovative approach that has the potential to deliver comprehensive diabetes self-management education that is culturally-appropriate. This book will discuss a randomized control trial of a promotora-led diabetes self-management intervention for Mexican Americans, the largest subgroup of Hispanics in the US. The methodology of the trial and the results will be discussed in detail, as well as recommendations for future research. The target groups for which this book is written include: nurses, physicians, health educators, public health administrators and any other health care providers, who work with vulnerable Hispanic populations.
