Helen Merrill started her professional career at the age of 15. After performing in competitions and theatres, she got a job as a singer in Reggie Charles' band. Merrill, who also became known as the "Sighs of New York" because of her emotional, sensual vocal performances, produced her first recording in 1952 with the Earl Hines Band. The D'Oro label was founded specifically for "A Cigarette For Company."
