The story is set in Austin, Texas, with intermittent road trips to Waco and Dallas. The young lawyers gain valuable courtroom experience with Crazy Ike - experience they must recall when Ike is falsely accused of murder and held without bond on the eve of their biggest and most difficult jury trial. They find themselves having to go it alone, relying only on what they have learned, what they have become, and a Presence they are just beginning to sense.
