Letters on the Atonement

Today's Church is troubled by theologians, scholars and clergy- yes, even some Wesleyans- who smugly voice doubt about cardinal doctrines, such as hell and the atonement. But these are not new, innovative ideas or groundbreaking theology. Heretics and their toxic teachings have disturbed the Church since its earliest days as the Adversary has worked to undermine its foundations. What is alarming is the hearing they are now receiving in the Church world. Richard Treffry, Jr., addressed several such deviations from truth in his day. He was a Methodist circuit rider who ministered during the era of the heirs of the Early Methodists, laboring through troubling issues. Jesus himself warned that false teachers will arise in the Church, and every generation must be on guard against their toxic doctrines.
