This is a Soviet-era engineering work dealing with structures such as large bridges on the new highway and railroad routes, dams at unique hydroelectric stations, and other works in the Arctic regions of the U. S. S. R. Ice action assumes special significance in these regions where the rivers typically have a significant thickness and strength of ice, plus an intensive ice breakup. The work was translated into English by the U. S. Army Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory.
