Formed on 16 July 1846, two months after the Mexican-American War was declared, the Mormon Battalion was the only religiously-based Army unit in American military history. The march of the Battalion is more than the story of a unique, courageous military unit - it is the history of a people repeatedly driven from their homes and threatened with extinction for their faith, a people who, despite hatred and prejudice, volunteered to fight for their country, who built a new life in a new land through sacrifice and obedience.
