Amerigo Vespucci
The publications of the Hakluyt Society (founded in 1846) made available edited (and sometimes translated) early accounts of exploration. Amerigo Vespucci (1454–1512) became a controversial figure after the publication of two letters attempting to undermine Christopher Columbus.
