Mountstuart Elphinstone (1779–1859) was a Scottish diplomat appointed the first British envoy to the Court of Kabul in 1808. First published in 1815, this volume contains his description of the culture and geography of Afghanistan which continued to inform British military policy in the region until the 1840s.
