Alexis Soyer (1810–58) was perhaps the first celebrity chef. A flamboyant, larger-than-life figure, he nonetheless took his profession very seriously. This is an anecdotal and admiring 1859 biography by his secretaries, François Volant and James Warren. It includes some of Soyer's recipes and other writings on food.
