Richard, Earl Howe (1726–99) participated in some of the Royal Navy's most significant conflicts: his ship the fired first shots of the Seven Years' War, he commanded the North American Station during the Revolutionary War and he masterminded the 'Glorious First of June' in 1794. This biography appeared in 1838.
