Based on a true story, Wrestling with Angels is a novel about two gay Pentecostal preacher's sons, one of whom disappears under ominous circumstances. Darren is a rebel who comes late to salvation; Brandon is a model preacher's kid until he comes out at eighteen and does virtually everything Darren had done and then some. Although Darren marries briefly and unhappily, he also comes out, yet unlike Brandon he hides his gay identity from their parents. The brothers become friends, but soon Darren disappears. The novel is a tale of competition and reconciliation, guilt and redemption, spiritual loss and gain.
