John Thackray Bunce (1828-1899) was editor of The Birmingham Daily Post and a leading Liberal. He was a trustee of Mason College, Chairman of the Birmingham City Art Gallery and a wealthy newspaper proprietor. On 7 March 1899 he was given Honorary Freedom of the City of Birmingham. His works include: Cloudland and Shadowland: A Story for Children (1865), A History of the Birmingham General Hospital and the Musical Festivals (1873), History of Old St. Martin's, Birmingham (1875), Fairy Tales: Their Origin and Meaning (1878), History of the Corporation of Birmingham (1878), Municipal Boroughs and Urban Districts (1882), Josiah Mason (1882), Books on Biography and Autobiography (1886) and The History of King Edward's Foundation in Birmingham (1895).
