Alexander Whyte
Reverend Alexander Whyte (1836-1921) was a Scottish divine. He was born at Kirriemuir in Forfarshire and educated at the University of Aberdeen and at New College, Edinburgh. He entered the ministry of the Free Church of Scotland and after serving as colleague in Free St. John's, Glasgow (1866-1870), removed to Edinburgh as colleague and successor to Dr. RS Candlish at Free St Georges. In 1909 he succeeded Dr. Marcus Dods as principal, and professor of New Testament literature, at New College, Edinburgh. His works include: Characters and Characteristics of William Law (1893), Bunyan Characters (4 volumes) (1893-1908), Samuel Rutherford and Some of His Correspondents (1894), Jacob Behmen: An Appreciation (1895), Lancelot Andrewes and His Private Devotions (1895), Bible Characters (6 volumes) (1896-1902), Santa Teresa: An Appreciation (1897), Father John of Cronstadt (1898), Sir Thomas Browne and His 'Religio Medici': An Appreciation (1898) and Cardinal Newman: An Appreciation (1901).
