George Eliot, pen name of Mary Anne Evans (1819-1880), was an English novelist, journalist and translator, best known for Adam Bede, The Mill on the Floss, Middlemarch, and Silas Marner, most set in provincial England. Her writing is noted for its realism and psychological insight. Silas Marner appears to be the simple tale of a reclusive weaver, but Eliot uses its strong realism to render a sophisticated treatments of her attitude to religion.
