"Out of the Closet with My Mom" is a novel aimed at helping children and parents who are going through a time when both sides are forced to come out due to ones' sexuality. A parent comes out as gay and their child is forced to "come out" as a child of homosexual parents. It's a stand alone personal narrative that explores the many aspects of having gay parents; coming out to friends, dealing with family members who do not accept their parents lifestyle, being confident about yourself in school and above all lets you know that you're not alone. The narrative follows pudgy, prepubescent Jon Watkins, dying to fit in when his mom decides to sit him and his sister down and tell them that her roommate isn't a roommate at all, she is her girlfriend. "Out of the Closet with My Mom" follows Jon's Middle and High School journey in which he and his sister have to deal with "coming out" about their mom to friends and family.
