The Woman in the Alcove is Anna Green's best mystery story. Anna Green wrote at the beginning of the 20th century. She was an American poet and novelist. Green was one of the first to write detective fiction in America, Her work is known for its legal accuracy and well plotted story lines. Her novels include, The Leavenworth Case (1878), A Strange Disappearance (1880), Hand and Ring (1883), Behind Closed Doors (1888), Forsaken Inn (1890), Marked "Personal" (1893), and The Doctor, His Wife, and the Clock (1895). The Woman in the Alcove begins, "I was, perhaps, the plainest girl in the room that night.--I was also the happiest--up to one o'clock.- Then my whole world crumbled, or at least suffered an eclipse. Why and how, I am about to relate..."
