This is a work of historical fiction about events transpiring around the time of the earthquake that felled the statue of the Colossus of Rhodes. Straton has been the ruler of Rhodes for a number of years, but in an election he loses to his opponent. He tries to declare the election void and to continue in power. The middle class and the tradition of democracy are strong in Rhodes so this is a risky move on his part. Comic and romantic scenes are interwoven in the plot. Some scenes are written in verse form, others in prose.
