Hugo and Liesl Huber move from Vienna to New York City in the early twentieth century. Hugo finds work as the conductor of various orchestras, including a silent movie orchestra, and Liesl designs costumes for the Metropolitan Opera. When Hugo receives an offer to conduct the mighty Eastman Theater Orchestra in Rochester, the Hubers believe they are moving to a safe and leafy musical paradise, presided over by George Eastman. But Rochester has its dangers, too, including prejudice and snobbery. Based on a true story, Play Music follows one immigrant family's story as it flourishes alongside the art of motion pictures.
