Ex President Atta Mills also served as vice-president to President Jerry Rawlings between 1997 and January 2001. He was born on July 21, 1944. After completing Achimota Secondary School, he continued his education at the University of Ghana, Legon, where he received a bachelor's degree and professional certificate in Law in 1967. He then left Ghana to pursue his graduate and postgraduate education in Law abroad. While studying for his PhD in Law at the prestigious School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) in London, John Atta Mills earned a Fulbright scholarship to attend the prestigious Stanford Law School in the United States of America in 1971. He was awarded his PhD at the age of 27. In 2011 Prof. Mills was elected by the NDC to lead them in the 2012 presidential elections but it did not come without any challenge. For the first time a sitting president in Ghana who had not exceeded his eight-year term would be challenged by the Vice-Chairman of the NDC party. He prevailed over his opponent and was set to lead the NDC in the December 2012 general elections on a possible second term run. Unfortunately he could not complete his full first term in office. He died 5 months to the general elections. The day was Tuesday July 24, 2012. On this fateful day Ghana and the world lost a great jewel and a gem. Professor Mills' death marked the departure of a great hero and a statesman of Africa. "May his soul rest in perfect peace."
