In the second book about the vampire Michael Steadler we find him as Martin Saddler, officially a schizophrenic hermit painter of horrid acrylics, with his girlfriend the photographer Sherri living next door in Valport. Being exiled from Brin, which he didn't take graciously, he is literally hiding from the world, sated by bitterness and love in his little fortress of solitude, and finally at somewhat peace. But peace never lasts, and when Carla comes knocking telling him that his maker Simon Marshall has disappeared, he has to go find him, realizing he's probably the only one who can find him. Unwillingly he travels to Simon's native France where he will find a whole lot more than he bargained for. Simon's history of love and hate, intrigue and conflict that is yet to be told seems to have caught up with him and now the only questions seems to be how many lives will be claimed in the mess of rivalry, old trespasses and occultism. The follow up of "Eat You Alive" offers a more compact story, continuing a few years after the first book left off. The themes of sex, blood and violence remain, as well and intrigue, love and war as the ever strange bedfellows. If you liked the first novel, you will not be disappointed. If you found the first book appalling, don't even go near this one. Mature themes. Reader discretion is advised.
