The island of Willoweist is home to Theirkind, an unusual culture composed of three related species. The controlling one eyes see themselves as superior to the two eyes, who in turn have more status than the humble three eyes.
The one eyes forbid any friendship, marriage, or reproduction between the species, fearing the strange, miraculous babies that could result from such interaction. Gifted with healing powers, such children are considered the product of witchcraft and strictly prohibited.
In the aftermath of a drunken night with a fellow one eye, recently graduated Perfect bears a child that should not exist. Despite both parents being one eyes, the child is clearly a two eye-and quickly demonstrates the startling array of powers that cause hybrid children to be feared.
Desperate to protect her son Mercy, Perfect hides him in the two eye quarter, where his powers continue to grow. When faced with a tragic accident, Perfect uses her son's abilities to save a life, only to be blackmailed by a former friend.
As the youth of Willoweist rebel against segregation, Perfect discovers a secret about her powerful father that could change everything-and put her and Mercy squarely in harm's way.
