Retired Customs Officer Gordon Valentino Kettle has time on his hands, most of which he spends on his allotment. Described by a friend as 'a disreputable old rogue with a doubtful temper and a taste for whisky', he is also known as a good listener and a man of discretion. Many visitors treat his shed as a confessional and tell him their secrets and problems they would not reveal to anyone else. But Gordon is not a man to mince his words and occasionally his advice is not what the recipient wishes to hear. Life on the allotment is never dull. Has Malcolm buried the body of his wife on his plot? Why does a ten-year-old girl hide in Gordon's shed? What is the secret Ted doesn't want his wife to know? And who are One and Nought? These and many other questions provide Gordon with plenty to think about. And how does his dead wife and the appearance of a mysterious 'leaflet-dropper' affect his life?
