Kate Douglas Wiggin (1856-1923) was a very influential figure in childrens education. In 1878 she founded the first free kindergarten school in San Francisco. The Birds' Christmas Carol tells the story of Carol Bird who, at the age of five, falls very sick. She brings joy to all those around her and plans a fantastic Christmas party for the neighboring family.
