Vivian Eldridge was the lifelong best friend of Mrs. Hawkins (Frances), the Peristons' housekeeper and cook. They shared their widowhood after the deaths of Mrs. Hawkins' fiancé and Vivian's husband. The morning after dinner at Periston Manor for the dear friend, her visiting granddaughter and her local brothers-in-law, Vivian Eldridge is found dead on the icy ground outside the churchyard. When Pip Periston, Rupert Dunstan and their group (including weekend guest Detective Chris Donato) come upon the body, foul play is immediately assumed.
