Maxam CabCoh grows up in a small village of Maya Indians, next to a river and surrounded by jungle. He learns lessons about life and family and the many spirits which live near the village. Eventually Maxam decides to train as the village storyteller's apprentice, and for a while things go well. Then an evil spirit-jaguar begins killing people in the valley, and the priests and hunters cannot stop it. When tragedy strikes Maxam's own family, he decides to stop this creature. But can he? Or will he just end up as the next victim?
