A prolific editor and writer, he edited the Jesuit Relations and Allied Documents (73 volumes) and Original Journals of the Lewis and Clark Expedition (8 volumes) and wrote France in America, 1497--1763 and Wisconsin: The Americanization of a French Settlement.
