Mastering English is like learning to cook: begin with the basic ingredients (parts of speech), mix them together according to common sense (a few basic guidelines), season to taste (punctuate), and serve with the appropriate garnishes and conventions (spelling). Like a Master Chef with a flair for teaching, Wolownick offers an innovative recipe for English, not through rote memorization, as most standard tomes require, but through an understanding of the choices that have become our modern language. The result is a mastery that puts you in charge of the kitchen.
Dierdre Wolownick is Professor of French, Spanish, and ESL/EFL at American River College, Sacramento, CA. Since 1971, she has taught five foreign languages to students of all ages in New York, France, California, and Japan. Her credentials include an M. A. in French and B. A. in Romance Languages/Secondary Education (Queens College, CUNY), a D. U. E. L. (l?Université de Reims, France), a Certificate in TESOL (UCLA), and many years evaluating international essays for Educational Testing Service. Having learned eight languages, Professor Wolownick knows what one needs to know in order to acquire language.
