A small Cherokee Indian boy, Little Echo, while passing along the Buffalo Trail, discovers a large salt lake in the Valley of Virginia. An orphaned teenager, John Call, finds work and love on board a vessel bound from England to America. His work as a surveyor eventually takes him and his family, including a daughter Mary, to the Valley of Virginia. The families of Little Echo and Mary become entwined in a battle for the land of the Valley. Love will be found, many lives will be changed, many lives will be lost, and many secrets will be buried in the bosom of the Valley of Virginia.
