Frederick James Gould (19 December 1855 - 6 April 1938) was an English teacher, writer, and pioneer secular humanist. This collection of classic Greek and Roman tales has been adapted for younger readers from the biographies of Plutarch. Each book has twenty-one stories, plus an introduction, preface, and brief biography of Plutarch. Tales of the Greeks contains tales such as Hardy Men of Sparta, Man with Many Faces, and Conqueror. Tales of the Romans includes Triumph, Red General, and Caesar and his Fortune (to name a few). A few black and white period illustrations by Walter Crane
