Posle smerti Pushkina Istorija Petra I byla zapreshhena Nikolaem I, zatem ejo rukopis' byla uterjana i najdena v 1917 godu[1]. Nachalo rukopisi i nekotorye ejo otryvki publikovalis' P. V. Annenkovym v 1855-1857 i 1880 godah. Otryvok, sostavljavshij bo?l'shuju chast' teksta, uvidel svet v 1938 godu i buduchi vkljuchjon v bol'shoe akademicheskoe izdanie sochinenij Pushkina[1]. Polnost'ju tekst byl opublikovan v 1950 godu v Vestnike Akademii nauk SSSR.
