Soon Comes Sunrise

In 1937, American-born Carlos Alianza, then a small child, departs from California with his American mother and Filipino father to the family plantation in Calinog, Philippines. With the construction of a new house, an idyllic future seemed possible. However, on December 19th, 1941-Carlos' sixth birthday-everything would change. Shortly after the bombing of Pearl Harbor, a worst fear was imagined as the Japanese began bombing their province of Iloilo. What would follow is an arduous tale of survival in the jungles of the island country. As the son of a guerilla-resistance captain facing insurmountable odds against the Japanese invaders, every day became a perilous adventure teeming with danger, and a future fraught with uncertainty. The book follows the memoirs of Carlos during those difficult years, his return to the Philippines, and their effort to leave a lasting, positive mark on the country.
