Coloring Can Change Your Life...
It has been psychologically proven to de-stress, promote relaxation and reduce anxiety. And it's just plain fun!
The acclaimed psychologist Carl G. Jüng was one of the first to utilize coloring back in the early 20th century, and his pattern of choice was the mandala.
According to psychologist Gloria Martínez Ayala, when coloring we activate different areas of our two cerebral hemispheres, and when we focus on a particular activity, are not concentrating on our worries. She goes on to say, coloring "brings out our imagination and takes us back to our childhood, a period in which we most certainly had a lot less stress."
Still Not Convinced?
The American Art Therapy Association say that creating artwork can be used to "explore feelings, reconcile emotional conflicts, foster self-awareness, manage behavior and addictions, develop social skills, improve reality orientation, reduce anxiety and increase self-esteem."
Marygrace Berberian, the Clinical Assistant Professor and Program Coordinator for the Graduate Art Therapy Program at NYU says "Coloring definitely has therapeutic potential to reduce anxiety, create focus or bring [about] more mindfulness."
Groundbreaking research in 2005 proved anxiety levels dropped when subjects colored mandalas, which are round frames with geometric patterns inside. Simply doodling, though, had no effect in reducing the other subjects' stress levels.
She went on to say "It can be particularly effective for people who aren't comfortable with more creatively expressive forms of art. My experience has been that those participants who are more guarded find a lot of tranquility in coloring an image."
