Set in Hanoi, Vietnam in the early 2000s, New Star is the story of Michael, a struggling artist and poet, who has lost his way. Broke, out of time and money, he takes on one last job teaching English at a language school owned by an Australian con-artist and a former penitentiary chaplain from the Deep South. Haunted by a past love and awash in a sea of misfits, pretentious NGO workers and local dissidents, he tries to escape the ennui of daily life with drugs and alcohol. Miraculously, he finds himself rising above the malaise, questioning existence.
