Zeke Reilly has visions of future events. He can't summon visions or do anything about the circumstances they reveal, no matter how tragic, and so he thinks of his condition as more affliction than talent. His spells are mostly embarrassing until Zeke sees things that frighten him. He realizes too late that one of his more cryptic intuitions is a murder by his own hand, an act he can neither escape nor explain. When he goes into hiding for this crime and is implicated in another he merely witnessed, he begins to think he is more cursed than afflicted, but while on the run he meets Cindy-her nom de phone sex Cindy Sweet Stuff-and their love affair is a brief respite in a life careening toward an uncertain end. Zeke has to leave Cindy behind and flees to Mexico. On this journey, which he thinks an attempted escape from his destiny, Zeke meets shamans of various levels of authenticity and the members of a native revivalist cult at war with a drug lord. Cindy goes to great links to locate him, but Zeke is pursued by bounty hunters tied to a trafficker in black market organs and so is always just beyond her reach. Ultimately Zeke discovers the reason for his visions in the ancient lands of the Aztec, Maya, and Toltec, and he begins to understand that he has been racing toward his destiny. Déjà Vu and the Phone Sex Queen is the story of a man's search for meaning in an absurd world where even tragic experience is commercialized, where traditional cultures are subsumed by mass culture, where violence is a fact of daily life.
