Abraham and Sarah Sullivan along with their four children leave Ireland during the Potato Famine in Ireland. They buy a plantation, not realizing it came with slaves. They free them, but it must be kept a secret. It is then that Grace, the oldest daughter decides to teach a young black boy to read and write despite the danger. A complicated friendship develops. Follow each member of the family as they struggle with joys, heartaches, secrets, and lies threatening to destroy them as they attempt to fit into a new culture. Will love and family be enough to hold them together? Should they face their demons or go back to Ireland?
