Andrew Walker
Brief Description: David Martin is a world-renowned sociologist, and one of the most prominent sociologists of religion ever to have emerged from the British Isles. Noted for his work on secularization, Pentecostalism, the Church of England and religious trends in general, his work has influenced the entire shape of a discipline that is now firmly established in many universities. This volume celebrates his 70th birthday, and his substantial and varied contributions to the sociology of religion stretching over a 50 year period. Andrew Walker and Martyn Percy have collated and edited a collection of essays-all freshly commissioned-that evaluate Martin's work. Contributors include Bryan Wilson, Steve Bruce, Grace Davie, Graham Howes, Richard Fenn, Karel Dobbelaere, Christie Davies, Robin Gill, Bernice Martin and Kieran Flanagan. This timely and appreciative volume is essential reading for all who want to understand the shape of the discipline of the sociology of religion. Biographical Note: Andrew Walker is Professor of Theology and Culture, King's College, London. Martyn Percy is Principal, Ripon College, Cuddesdon, UK. From 1997-2004 he was Director of the Lincoln Theological Institute for the Study of Religion and Society. Martyn has recently been appointed honorary Professor at King's College, London and also holds an Adjunct Professorship of Theology and Ministry at Hartford Seminary, Connecticut, USA. Martyn is a regular contributor to Radio 4, The BBC World Service, The Independent, The Guardian and other media. Since September 1999 he has served as a Council Member and Director of the Advertising Standards Authority in London. He is also Canon Theologian for Sheffield Cathedral. Review Quotes: "There is plenty for all to enjoy [in this book] whether their palate is that of the basic practitioner in the parish or the sophisticated palate of a theoretical sociologist of religion." Derek J. Tidball, Northwood ANVIL 19.3, 2002
