The Waller Journals tells a coming of age story based on the letters, diaries, and journal of George Waller. The reader follows George from his humble beginnings in Martinsville, Virginia, a hamlet in the Blue Ridge Mountains just north of the North Carolina border, to his time at The Medical College of Virginia. George eventually joined the 24th Virginia Infantry in March 1862. The following month he was promoted to Hospital Steward. George and his regiment participated in most the major battles with the Army of Northern Virginia.
It gives the reader a very personal insight into the rapidly deteriorating conditions that the medical personnel and soldiers of the Confederacy had to deal with as the war progressed from one who witnessed the horrors of a sectional war.
