In 1883, young Wes Montana, hired gun for the cattlemen in Montana Territory, learns his Arapaho mother has been murdered down in Arizona. He then discovers that his white father is Ray Eastman, still alive and a wealthy rancher with his own family. Wes becomes certain his father was responsible for his mother's death and he is determined to track Ray down. In Western Colorado, Eastman has an unfaithful wife, Mona, and a useless teenage son. Living with the family is a young lady named Rosalie, the orphaned daughter of Eastman's old friend, who begins to fall for the hired gun. As he tries to discover the truth, Wes finds himself on his father's side in a range war. He longs to reveal that he is Ray's first born son, and to embrace his half-brother, but Wes is not convinced his father is innocent and may still take revenge. As secrets threaten to explode and the range war races to conclusion, Wes must find out who murdered his mother before the killer returns to hunt down Wes...
