In the Gloved Hand

Little Katie has a secret; she's learning to speak German, taught by the old bookseller. By the time she is seventeen, her only living relatives are her mother's parents who have never seen Katie. Desperate for the security of a family, she leaves America and travels to Belgium. What she finds is fear beyond her worst dreams when Nazi troops occupy their village early in WWII. Jeannette Cadieux prays to live long enough to keep Katie safe but they are completely at the mercy of the grim officer who holds their lives in his gloved hand. To the bitter villagers, it is only fair that the widow of Claude Cadieux now has the wolfish German in her house. Katie learns that the invaders are not always her worst enemies and that appearances are sometimes very different from the reality.
