Eugene Pickering is a short story by Henry James published in 1874. The story is set in a foreign context - Germany - and shows the almost antagonistic differences between Americans and Europeans, very nuanced and, on some occasions, caricatured. The protagonist who gives his name to the story is an intelligent and shy young man who has lived all his life under the severe surveillance of his father, who has educated him to become a perfect gentleman and has prevented him from immersing himself in the "great world" to avoid being contaminated by vicious or unhealthy ideas...
