Abrupt closure remains a serious complication of Percutaneous Transluminal Coronary Angioplasty. Besides the classical factors of obstruction, the nature of the contrast media could be an additional one. The clinical studies now available with ioxaglate confirm this hypothesis. The lowest rate of abrupt closures observed in two randomized studies comparing ioxaglate to other low osmolality contrast media is the logical consequence of a more pronounced activity on blood coagulation as demonstrated in vitro.
