Loanwords in Italian, in particular in the language of sport, were subject to vehement replacement attempts during fascism (1922-1943). This study examines the relationships between linguistic transformation and puristic intervention by taking an onomasiological, corpus-based approach, throws new light on fascist loanword purism and reveals mechanisms of lexical transformation in Italian (sporting) language.
