Brillouin, Raman and Nmr Characterization of Rare-earth Doped Glasses

This book covers experimental results of Brillouin and Raman light scattering as well as NMR spectroscopy measurements elucidating structural, vibrational, elastic, photoelastic and magnetic properties of europia doped soda magnesia aluminosilicate glasses as a function of the content of individual glass components to provide new knowledge related to the mechanism underlying the formation of holographic gratings in these materials. The effect of rare earth oxide doping, alumina and soda substitution for silica are discussed in terms of changes in measured hardness, compressibility, polarizability, polymerization of glass network and coordination of glass formers. Structural implications for measured photoelastic constants are also discussed. The strength of the holographic storage signal in these photonic glass systems is analyzed from the view point of variety of important factors, such as the number of the excited europium ions, high-energy phonons associated with Si-nonbridging oxygen vibrations, weakly bound sodium ions charge balancing tetrahedral alumina complexes and stability of the traps for mobile light ions.
