School Counselors with and Without Teaching Experience: a Comprehensive Overview and Comparative Analysis
Reba Criswell
Historically, school counselors were drawn from the teaching profession. However, today the majority of states no longer require classroom teaching experience for a school counselor certification. With this shift in certification requirements for school counselors, recent empirically based studies addressing this issue are limited. In this book Dr. Reba Criswell examines several areas of school counseling practice. These include (a) a summary of the delivery of services adopted by the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) National Model, (b) preparation of school counselors, and (c) teaching experience and school counselor effectiveness. Dr. Criswell also presents the results of a comprehensive study in which she compared teachers? opinions of the effectiveness of school counselors with and without teaching experience. As teachers have more contact with students than any other school personnel, their perceptions of school counselor effectiveness are of great importance. Practicing school counselors, school counselors in training, counselor educators, and other professionals will find this book to be a useful companion.
