The Lives of Calcutta Street Children: a Case Study

The book purports to be a snapshot of socio-economic strata of the street children of Calcutta metropolis, drawing strength from a field study on them and also have studied the level of pollution particularly of lead, caused due to the exposure to car exhausts. These street children collect solid wastes of different kinds from the dustbins and other dumping places. The studies reveal that the children are the common victims of diseases like fever, skin, jaundice and malaria. The survey reveals that most of the inhabitants of the street have migrated from the suburbs of Calcutta and Bihar and have been living on the street for last five years or more. To provide opportunities to the street children to lead a normal life can be made possible only by bringing social awareness among the general public towards their responsibilities.
