Strategies Used in Multilingual Translation of Russian Proper Names: Personal and Geographical, into Persian and English

Translation of proper names has been a thorny issue all over the world and excessively done over the past decades. As one looks into the history of translation, one realizes that although there have been many strategies to render proper names there has been little agreement on a specific strategy. The dataset for the present descriptive comparative study consists of 300 well-known Russian proper names including 150 personal and 150 geographical ones, which are analyzed and compared with their English and Persian counterparts. It would be necessary for translators and translation students to know all kinds of applied strategies as a guideline, with no attention to the frequencies in the present dataset. It is highly recommended to University lecturers of translation studies to make use of the results to classroom practices. The findings can also be taken into consideration in the preparation of textbooks and materials to practice in translation workshops. It might be a great source of insight into strategies employed by translators, and it offers numerous opportunities in terms of investigating the characteristics of the language of translation.
