Comment Clauses: and Their Role in Spoken English
Mojmir Muzikant
The book deals with the so-called comment clauses, namely you know, you see and I mean. These clauses occur mainly in spoken English. The research is based on the analysis and comparison of four authentic texts ? two face-to-face and two telephone conversations. The comment clauses are examined according to three different criteria ? pragmatic function, position within the turn and the response to the use of the comment clauses on the part of the hearer.
